About the session
Gone are the days when publishing in-house meant going it alone. Today, independent scholarly publishers have more opportunities to partner with software and service providers to extend their operational capacity than ever before—and it’s becoming imperative to stay competitive. The most successful independent publishers of the future will be the ones that work with vendors to automate manual tasks, amplify their editorial teams, and future-proof their publishing programs.
This session will present practical ways publishers can work with vendors to sustain independent journals without sacrificing quality, rigor, or growth, from the perspective of two independent vendors who’ve helped hundreds of mission-driven scholarly society and institutional publishers strengthen their in-house journal programs. Participants will learn how to:
* Identify infrastructural and operational challenges that often threaten the sustainability of independent journals and how to stay ahead of them
* Evaluate which editorial and production functions they can outsource to address resource constraints without compromising publishing independence
* Build transparent, value-aligned partnerships with editorial services and software vendors to optimize workflows and manage costs while improving author, reviewer, and editor experience.
